Having a baby is one of life’s most exciting and challenging experiences. It’s an emotional rollercoaster. One day you could feel happy and joyful, the next you could feel stressed, frustrated and overwhelmed.
Emotional health is a state of wellbeing. Being emotionally healthy is just as important as being physically healthy. When you are feeling well, you are better equipped to handle the stressful times and really enjoy life with your little one.
Don’t ever be afraid to ask for help, even before it’s really needed. It’s also important to accept help when it’s offered. Try to find ways that you can still enjoy activities that make you feel happy. If you don’t have the resources on hand to have some child free time (when you’re happy to leave baby with someone else) then why not set up a pram walking group with friends. You’ll then be able to share experiences whilst getting out in the fresh air, which will promote your physical and emotional wellbeing.
Finally, don’t ever feel alone. Talking to someone you trust about your feelings can be really helpful. Be proud of your achievements. We are all doing our best for our children. Give yourself a break, be kind to yourself and just do what you can, when you can.
You’re not just a new parent, you’re still you… and that’s pretty amazing.
